Forget Everything You Thought You Knew About Aging

We’ve come to expect failing health and abilities as we grow older, but it’s not too late to readjust your chronometer, so to speak. Just because Uncle Bill had a heart attack or Aunt Sally developed diabetes doesn’t mean you have to follow in their footsteps. You can’t change your family health history, but you can take charge of your own lifestyle and your future.

In “6 Aging Myths We Need to Stop Believing,” Deepak Chopra, M.D., discusses why getting older doesn’t have to feeling worse. You can fret about osteoporosis, or you can improve muscle mass and bone density through training. You can worry about why you forgot your keys this morning, or you can sign up for classes that challenge your mind. You can wonder where all your energy went, or you can do things that make you feel good — meditation, yoga, tai chi, or a walk in the woods. If you feel lost after retirement, why not volunteer? There are all kinds of youth, veterans and other organizations that would love to have you and your experience.

None of us will be young forever, and there are many illnesses that we may not be able to prevent. We can, however, focus on the things that improve our bodies, minds, and spirits. Maybe the inevitable decline of aging isn’t so inevitable after all.
