We know children’s brains are like sponges, soaking up information, learning new languages with relative ease, and growing and changing on their journey to adulthood. On the flip side, many of us believe that once we’ve grown up, our brains are done. We’ve come to think that at best they’re stuck in neutral, or that it’s all downhill as cells drop off and abilities fade.
None of this is true, of course. According to Dr. Roger Landry in “5 Fitness Tips to Improve Your Brain, just published in U.S. News & World Report, you can make your brain stronger and healthier by exercising it — just like any other muscle. Dr. Landry, who serves as president of Masterpiece Living, calls the brain’s ability to rewire itself based on experience and learning “neuroplasticity.”
Why is keeping fit mentally important? Dr. Landry cites a fascinating study of nuns in Minnesota who had “Alzheimer’s brains,” filled with the tangles and plaque characteristic of Alzheimer’s. This came as a surprise, because they had not shown the symptoms we associate with Alzheimer’s. Their physically and mentally active lifestyle had helped to stave off this dreaded disease.
Physical and mental exercises are equally important, and Dr. Landry recommends both in addition to a balanced diet. At Central Baptist Village, we’re proud to offer our residents fun, stimulating programs that engage the mind and body, like walking and computer clubs, cultural outings, and abundant social opportunities. Our specialized SeniorFITness™ exercise program, established by Alliance Rehab and available to all residents of Central Baptist Village, is designed to:
- Enhance quality of life
- Maintain independence
- Increase energy and vitality
- Reduce risk of falls
- Improve muscular strength, endurance, balance, cardiovascular health, and self-esteem
